Jack Shepherd
Abstract Artist
About me
My name is Jack Shepherd and I’m a local artist based in Worcestershire, specialising in various abstract artwork, ranging from paintings to sculptures.
During my relatively short time as an artist, I have developed my creative knowledge and understanding of the discipline. Previously I used a narrow selection of art materials, but more recently i’ve introduced oil paint, inks, charcoal and various other mixed media into my works which have produced more engaging outcomes.
Living with the condition of Aspergers, has definitely affected the way in which I see the world.
Within art-making, I feel I can really express both myself and my ideas in a more honest and personal way.
Inspirations
Various forms of media, including film and art, inspire and spark my imagination, from David Lynch's nightmarish "Eraserhead" to Dave Mckean's surreal illustrative style in "Mirrormask". One genre i am particularly drawn to is horror, specifically Francis Bacon's distorted portraits and Guillermo Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth", where art evokes powerful emotional responses which stem from a macabre place.
Musically I take influences from funky soulful artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, along with Boards of Canada's soothing soundscapes to Sylvan Esso's upbeat dance music: each creates the right mood or atmosphere.
About my process
My paintings take on ambiguous titles allowing the viewer to respond freely without being drip fed information.
When creating some art, i work best when i have the freedom to physically move about. This movement gets incorporated into my final painted piece be it canvas or sculpture.
